Exhaust Leak

Postby Harold R » Sat Mar 18, 2006 10:38 am

I've been trying to fix an exhaust leak on the lo-boy I got recently from my Dad. It seems to be leaking at the joint of the manifold elbow and the exhaust pipe. I removed the clamp which is in good shape,(just got from TM), and found nothing out of the ordinary. The fit between the elbow and the flare-end of the pipe was smooth and even. Something happens when the clamp is put on and tightened. Perhaps too much torque on the clamp? Seems like it should have a donut gasket, but my '74 doesn't have one and it doesn't leak. :? :?

I never get tired of looking at it. :D :D :D

No gasket. I don't have one of those clamps in front of me right now, but I believe there is a frontwards and backwards to it. Make sure you have it the right way. If there is room, try rotating it to a different orientation. Also, be sure the 2 halves are placed directly opposite each other and tighten the bolts evenly.

You could use valve grinding compound on 1 piece, just a thin coating. Put the two together, wiggle the lbow back and forth. You should see a clar even line on both pieces if they line up well. Could be a little bit of corrossion has left a gap in the fit. A machinest would use blueing for this test. With compound if the missfit is small you might grind it out.

HR
Like Jim said
but I believe there is a frontwards and backwards to it.
I cleaned mine up with a dremel tool. I had the same problem just keep playing with it, it will fall into place.
