The Right Sized rear main seal ???

Postby Rick Prentice » Mon Mar 20, 2006 8:04 pm

I had to run to the bearing specialists at Applied Industrial Technologies today. I decided to go to the barn and remove the rear seal housing on a spare 1950 engine that was in "Harley" before the V-6. I layed the housing on the counter and told the guy, I need a new seal. He did some cross checking, then told me that National Seal was just bought out by Timken. He called Timken in Crossville, Tenn, and they said yes, we have it. Then the parts guy came back out with a seal that they had in stock and said, this is the same size as National($19.00), only cheaper. I gave him the $16.11 plus tax and headed for home. As soon as I hit the garage, I knocked out the old seal, wiped the housing clean, and noticed that the new seal was the correct size. I had to press the seal back into the housing. "NO SILICONE REQUIRED". My question to all of you that have bought new seals that were undersized, what was the number of the seal and the number of the original housing? My housing number is 251363R2. Thanks, Rick

I believe the "R2" makes it the later retainer that the seals fit properly.

Rick, that housing # 251363 R2 is the later housing. I purchased this housing for my 55 cub in 1983. Price then was $53.13. The rear seal that was purchased on the same ticket was # 364692 R91, and cost $10.48. I don't remember how well things fit together then, but do remember being told that I had to purchase the newer flange to fit the seal as the older rear main seal was no longer available.
I did another seal replacement last year into the same newer style retainer, and was sold the same # seal, cost $19.40. This seal fit very loose into the retainer, could push it almost all the way in with my fingers. I applied a couple coats of Permatex Hi-tack sealer to the seal letting each dry. Then inserted the seal into the flange, then staked the flange in four places. I then coated the outer edge of the seal, and the retainer with the Hi-tack. All of these parts were purchased from IH dealers.

Ah Nuts. I thought I was onto something. Guess whoever had the cub before me replaced the housing and seal. What's the chances of that happening?? Back to the drawing board :D Rick
