Don't take the hood off!!!!!

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Thu Mar 23, 2006 7:12 pm

I tell people, and I tell people, DON'T TAKE THE HOOD OFF you'll be sorry. Did I listen to myself, NO I went ahead and did it. the governor seal was leaking oil into the magneto, and replacing the seal didn't help, so I decided to see why. The radiator has a very slow leak, and its' a lot easier to work on the governor with out it on, so take it off. easier with the fan out of the way, so take it off too, good idea to check the bearings anyway.

the ears are bad on the crankshaft pulley, so I may as well change it while I am this far.

May as well pull the front cover off and clean it up, and since I need to change the crankshaft seal That way I can support the back reinstalling the seal.

Now lets see, I think I'll ...........

Oh, by the wya, the oil leak was caused by a groove worn in the governor shaft, but thanks to Ralph I had one on hand waiting for this project.

John, that puller you have connected to the front pully sure looks like a hernia make, but hoss enough to do the job. Bet you never encounter one that it won't budge. Bill

bill, that is a case of overkill, but after I broke a 5 ton gear puller on one, I decided to make sure I didn't have any more problems.

Your 2200 PSI pressure washer would have cleaned up some of that mess. I just had to say that. Sorry. Eugene

So how is the Gibson comming along?

I'm thinking I'm gonna have to pull my hood, to get the gas tank cleaned and red-coated, so I'll be in your condition soon, John. Making a mental list.....hmm, I think I'll change the head, as I noticed coolant on the #2 spark plug; been two full years on those plugs, so those'll get replaced, was thinking about cleaning out the final drives.... hmmm... taking the hood off leads to splittin' the tractor? Seriously, I will have my son lap the valves while I have the head off.

Between my artifical hip and arithritus in my back, getting on and off was getting to be a problem, which Rick Prentice (billyandmillie) solved for me by making a custom step I could get both feet on. Sure makes it a lot better. this is a close up of it before it was painted.

Yep John.... I was warned too but failed to pay attention. I could deal with (ignore??) a leaky TC but the broken bolts on the rockshaft bearings had to be fixed.... so the hood came off. And the bad bearing on the long shaft to the transmission had to be fixed, along with the one for the PTO.

So, since I have the tranny on the bench, may as well strip it down to bare metal and prime it before working on it. And oh yeah, brakes may come in handy one day, so I guess I better figure out what I need there.

JN told me DON'T TAKE THE HOOD OFF! Like a little kid I just did it anyway.
