Cub Brakes

Postby VinceD » Wed May 10, 2006 10:24 pm

This time I will ask first, before I make the purchase.

Is there any advantage to buying the new IH brake band assembly as opposed to an aftermarket brand? :?: I have the older, non-toggle style.

I also see where JP Tractor sells a "used" brake band assembly. Has anyone had any experience with these?

Thanks in advance,
Vince

never having changed brakes on any of our Cubs, I am not an expert
BUT my only comment can be, there is used and used.
you need to have faith in your supplier that he will not be sending you nearly bare metal with virtually no material attached.

Hi Vince. Usually when you call JP's, you'll be talking to Jamie, who's in charge of the orders. They probably have lots to choose from. Just ask her for one that's ready to install. They're great people to work with. Tell her that you're with this site and they were recommended for selling great replacement parts :D . Rick

I bought a pair of used ones from JP when we visited their impressive salvage operation during the first Cubarama. I was taken to the shelf where all the brake bands were and was encouraged to select my own. It wasn't really necessary since they had obviously thrown any that weren't good in the dumpster. You can buy with confidence from them.

Vince:

The best and the easiest way to get these is via, and in no particular order as all three are Site Sponsors and ALL THREE are excellent and very trustworthy people/businesses..

Also, here is another avenue. Especially if you have the old assembly and are in need of linings. Almost any place that does commercial truck brakes etc., can line your bands for a pretty good place. Friction Plus is a local company. Nice thing about it, is that you can recycle your older band with a new liner and have em ready for a the next brake job or the next Cub in the fleet :!:    :D

:D Thanks for all the great info and suggestions.

I too have been to JP Tractor and was very impressed. I didn't buy any brake parts at the time because I had not started to tear anything apart yet and wasn't sure what I needed.

We have a lot of hills here in the Ozarks so I think I will go with new linings. If nothing else, it will give me peace of mind.

Although there is no one locally in our area to do the work, I can send them to a friend in Belleville, IL who can do the job and send them back. Belleville Automotive is a FANTASTIC machine shop and I can highly recommend them to anyone.

Thanks again,
Vince

I replaced my original brake bands while I had the final drives off. I figured since I had the whole back end apart and had installed new seals, I might as well put new brakes on as well. I never regretted it. Like one of the other posters suggested, if you have ample brake material left, but they are soaked with oil from leaking seals, just drive the oil off with a torch. Just go easy near the rivets and you'll have it.
