Adjusting Timing

Postby Dan England » Mon May 22, 2006 2:02 pm

I installed a different mag on my Cub recently. I set the timing as described in the owner's manual. The Cub starts and runs pretty good but not, I think, as smooth as before the change. My question: Can I adjust (improve) the timing by rotating the top of the mag toward or away from the engine? Dan

I failed to mention that I would be rotating the mag while engine is running and listening to see if it runs more smoothly. Dan

You can. Thats how we did it with a timing light on old cars.

I used to be a stickler for setting timing by the book. I'm over that now  I set it by ear where it runs best and leave it at that now. If you hand crank your Cub that may not be the best advise but if like most Cubs, your cranking with a switch, then set'er where she likes it the most.
