How often does one have to sharpen that saw blade? I would imagine that it would be quite costly to do if you couldn't do it yourself...

This looks like a REALLY KEWL rig!

Depending on the amount of dirt on the wood, the blade might need sharpening a couple of times a day. A file did the job.

Mike:

BD is correct. Depending on how much dirt, any barb wire or nails in the logs will determine how often I have to sharpen.

Normally takes about 3 swipes with a real good Mill Bastard File, and about 20 minutes to do em all or about 10 mintes per side. There are about 100 teeth with a rather large set. I do the gullets about once a year and that is with a round file. The hardest job is stoning to ensure that the teeth are all the same length. Takes a large stone and time.. but well worth the effort. That is done every 3 or 4 years. When I say side, I mean that each tooth has a rake angle. To keep that rake angle relatively constant, one must file every even tooth at the same angle form the left side and the odd from the right side. Of course this depends on which side the rake is on your index tooth.

One must remember to cover the exposed teeth when finished with cutting, so that the heat of the sun does not take the temper out of the blade. Even though high heat is normally the cause ot losing temper (such as being heated by a torch), continued prolonged exposure to the sun, even in winter can cause minute loses in temper that over time will make the blade brittle. This can be prevented by simply using an old bicycle tire/tire's to cover the exposed tips..

mykarmann, you can have your pick of these stationary units for $50 bucks if you want one. I think there's at least four of them in there somewhere. I'm less than 1 hour's drive from New Carlisle, living just north of Middletown.

Rudi, After viewing the pics of your saw installation,I can't believe you would let that young man, shown manning the saw, while you stood around and took pics all day long!
