What to do with Calcium

Postby Jackman » Mon Aug 14, 2006 8:24 pm

I want to drain the Calcium out of my wheels, but that leaves me with the problem of what to do with it, I have called the local recycling center but they only take motor oil. Is Calcium a hazardous material? Can I just drain it out on the ground? I am guessing Ihave 15-20 gallons since with the valve stem at the 11-oclock position or lower I get the calcium

Jackman - what you are dealing with is salt water. It will kill the grass but if you can dump it on a gravel driveway it will do no harm. County and township road crews used to use it for dust control on dirt roads.

Dribble it on the road this winter to melt the snow and ice. That's what the state does.

The City of Moncton and the City of Dieppe both used to use rock salt or some of the newer synthetic ice melting products.. and found them to be very expensive, a waste and not entirely useful.

A few years ago they started exprimenting with Brine applicators.. Brine being nothing but salt disolved in water.. They found that the Brine worked much better than rock salt or it's equivalent, especially on asphalt surfaces.. and prevented ice build up more economically and worked at lower temperatures.

CACL is basically brine... save it for your driveway.. Just keep it away from your trout pond.. if you have one :!:

A farm tire dealer might be willing to remove it for the donation. He could sell it to others for their tires. No cost to ask.

My tire shop wanted $75 per hour with a $49 service call charge to pump the calcium from the Cub, a Case VAC, and Deere 60. Did I pay it? Ask the dead grass in my drive! One word of advice - if you let the fluid drain down your gravel drive, make sure the tractor is sitting with valve stem at the 12:00 o'clock position when you remove the valve stem. Then roll the tractor until the stem is at the 6:00 o'oclock position. Never remove the valve stem from a loaded, inflated tire when the stem is below the fluid level. Don"t ask me how I kow!!

I can attest to the fact that calcium from a tire will kill grass. Only on tire in the big JD 60 has calcium in not. So do we now know how i found out it kills grass. :D
