Cub Has No Spark!

Postby Brandon Webb » Mon Sep 18, 2006 8:48 am

Tried to start my demo yesterday, roughly wired it up. I can short out the points with a screwdriver and it'll spark, It just won't fire the plugs? What next. The points are newer, I sanded them and set them, should be ok. Do I have a bad dist. or coil? or ? Thanks Brandon.

Hold the distributor end of the spark plug type wire that goes from the coil to the distributor about 1/8 inch from the block. Jump (short across) the points again. You should get spark everytime you jump the points.

No spark from the coil wire - bad coil. Spark from the coil wire - start looking at the rotor, distributor cap, etc..

Ok, It's got a brand new 12 volt coil, So the juice goes from the switch through the points then to the coil? In what order does this happen? Thanks Brandon.

Make sure the points are making and breaking as the distributor turns. Take the cap off and the dust cover and watch as you crank the engine over. Make sure the points open and close completely.
Since you get a spark when using a screwdriver, your coil is OK. It is either in the points or the delivery system (rotor and cap)

Must be the cap, and rotary button. I took the cap over cranked it over and they're breaking. I set them at .020, they look good and arc when shorted out. The coil I took off a running tractor so I know it's good, I'm just not getting any fire to the plugs. Thanks Brandon.

Primary side of the ignition. Current flow is from the battery to the ignition switch. From ignition switch to one terminal on the coil. Through the coil and out the opposite terminal. From the coil to the points. From the points to ground (back to battery when the points close).

Check / replace your rotor button and or cap with known good ones. Also, verify your timing. If this thing is firing between the towers on the cap it ain't never gonna work. Make sure the rotor tip is in the right position near the towers when the points open.
