#3 cultivator

Postby huntingpal » Thu Oct 19, 2006 4:12 am

I have one and have used it a couple times. It works good. If I sock it down in the ground very deep it will really make either one of my cubs work hard :) As soo as the beens around the house get combined I will put it to work again :D

I was trying to strike up a deal with the guy that has the one on ebay, but last night he told me it had a homemade wheel. If it would have had 2 good wheels, I would have bought it and tried to fix it, it has about 6 inches cut off the front of it. Brandon.

Asking $225.00US as a start bid is kinda presumptious I would think for a Rubed up item as that. For a complete original, that would be a fair final price I would think.

No it's not worth that. He was trying to work up a trade for some M parts, but he wants me to deliver, and It's just not worth it for me. I was trying to sell him some parts, and come up with the cultivator as trade in.

What were these cultivators used for? Just to groom a whole field? To remove weeds? Break up the ground? I just like the way they mount up. It would be really neat restored behind an early hand lift cub. Very simple mounting, similar to a plow. No front Rockshaft Required, plus it couldn't weight hardly anything. Brandon.

I do have one, but it has twice been modified for other tractors. Presently, it is setup for category 1 3 point and looks almost as if it was originally that way. The long arms in the front are gone and there is no sign that wheels were ever on it. Works well in sandy soil, not good in clay. The curved spring mounts might be now unobtainable new and even if they are, would be expensive.

I just looked at the eBay offering. The cut off front is more than just flat bar. It had ends to bolt to the Cub drawbar, if I remember correctly. The one I have was modified originally about 40 years ago.

Yeah, I looked at the parts manual (thanks rudi) and it showed the front hitch. Looks very simple to make. If I could just have made new arms for it and the hitch, I'd have done it. But he's a 5 hour drive away from me. I just thought it would be something a little different to take to a show. Most people have never seen one. I know where a rear mounted disc plow is, I'm going to check on it. It has the long rod that goes up and mounts to the front steering arm. Just looking for something a little different for my 47 cub I'm fixing. The way this stuff is getting harder to find, I'm thinking about just becoming a collector instead of a seller. Thanks Brandon.

1 more thing. The right side wheel has a curvature. The left one is homemade, it is flat. If you don't have good wheels, and a hitch, it's not even good parts. Maybe a few of the feet are good, he said some were welded. Didn't put that in his listing. I believe I'll hold off until I find a good one. Brandon.

The gauge wheels were an option, but I think every one I ever saw had them. Back at Cubarama time, JP had at least one available. But their web site currently lists one as "sold". If I was actively looking for one, I would check there anyway.

The manual shows that they had optional Pneumatic wheels, never seen one of those, but I think the steel wheels are a little neater. Brandon.

Looked at Jp's it really looks nice. Even has the lifting chains. Probably wasn't used much. I'll hold off till I can find a good one. Brandon.

I have one. I paid too much for; just ask my wife!  It is complete and looks fairly unused. I too wanted to restore it for shows and such, but then it would have to be stored inside and the shop is tight already. I mounted it once, just so I could move it, looked neat on the back. Wish I had acreage to use it on!.

I need a part for mine to make it complete earlier this year and JP's had one that they use for parts. you might want to check with them for parts also if you need some.
