Valve grind question

Postby Glenn » Mon Oct 23, 2006 9:29 am

Well, now that summers over I'll be getting back to reassembling the Cub and would like to clean-up the valves and valve seats. In the interim I've picked up valve and seat grinders, I might getaway with just lapping but a few of the seats look pitted, I haven't see any posts on seat grinding, most seem to deal with cut and replace, can it be done? If so, does anybody have the stone sizes and where to get them?

Thanks, Glenn

Hi Glenn. I know it can be done. I helped the neighbor put together a cub engine this past summer that we ground the seats. Not sure which stone we used(bad memory).

The one we used was an old Black and Decker. Not sure what brand you have, but here's one link where you can buy some stones, once you figure out which ones you need :D Snap=on sells them too.

Thanks for all the great replies, in the interim I sent a request for info to Goodsons tech support center, a few hours I received a call from one of their helpfull folks, and he gave me a couple of part numbers. I looked em up in their web site, and found a few more that might be interesting, so here they are:

Exhaust - 1" 45 degree
SX-745-R Ruby (old Black & Decker type)
SX-745-NC Nickle-Chrome
SX-745-F Finish

Intake - 1 1/8" 45 degree
SX-945-R
SX-945-NC
SX-945-F

http://www.goodson.com/

All of these stones have 11/16-16 threads and of course they have other thread patterns too. Now, the support guy recommended the "NC" stones, but the catalogue says the "R" is used cast iron, "NC" are for hardened seats, aren't Cub seats cast iron? As soon as I resolve which type (NC or R) I am going to order a set along with a Finish set. I plan to take a bunch of pictures as I try to grind & lap the pits out, so I can post 'em.

Thanks again for the help, Glenn
