Postby BackswampCub » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:38 pm

This is my first post. I know I should introduce myself and all. But I was too excited about what I found today. Excited and then Let Down. I am restoring a 1960 Cub. Due too this I now have Cubdar Every country Road Has potential Blips on it. I look in every farms open barn door. Tool shed and nook and cranny as I drive. Well today I was driving a road just 5 minutes away from home. Cubdar was up and running Nothing,Nothing,Nothing,Nothing,Nothing,Blip(False alarm Massey Pony)Nothing,Nothing BLIP,BLIP,BLIP, There it was a 1950 High Crop Cub Sitting there like it had just been roled out of the deep dark shadows of a barn. It was rusty and dirty but too me it glistened like Morning dew in the first rays of Sun. Excitely I drove by three times to survey the situation. Car in driveway check, Barn doors open check. It was time I pulled in right up to the tractor. It was game face time can't act too excited. Got out of truck. Walked by tractor like it was nothing right too the farmer standing there. Exchanged Hellos. He asked what he could help me with. I used the nonconcerned nonexcited voice. "Came to ask about that old rusty Cub" Farmer Responds. "Oh you mean that Rare 1950 High Crop"
Darn bluff called and dreams crushed. Tractor not for sale sentimental no amount of money could buy it. To quote the farmer. Sorry for the long story. But that was my day in Cubville

Blackswamp,

Your name and town is interesting! I live on the eastern edge of the historic black swamp in northern Ohio. Is your location also historical? Our history springs from the difficulties the swamp caused during the war of 1812.

Oh, I'm also working on a '60, but a Lo-Boy.

Welcome aboard and interesting story.

BackSwampCub:

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

Excellent story and one that many of us share although maybe not with the Hi-Crop... they are rare. I have never seen one yet.. Many of us where ever we go are always looking for another Cub it seems, even though we say we aren't -- we are.. my wife always looks kind of funny at me whenever we are on country roads and my eyes are darting left and right :!:    8)

It is an affliction once infected with, one cannot erase it seems. I see you are well bitten.. so I would expect that we will here the acquisition of #2 for you soon. Oh btw... I like the 54 Beetle -- awwesome year - awesome car :!:  :D

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's :?: . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Oh, and while the program still lasts.. you might want to check the Announcement: Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer - On-Line Form thread at the top of the Cub Forum and send away for the new style safety cap before that program runs out as well.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D

Welcome Backswamp. If you're already using the word Cubdar (cub + radar), I'd say you're either related to Bigdog, Ralph, or Brandon, and you've been lurking on the site for a while :D

Great story. I thought for sure you were going to say the farmer GAVE  it to you. NUTS :D

BackswampCub,
(Yes, I noticed it is Backswamp, not Blackswamp.)
If the owner was reasonably friendly, stop back once in a while and make friends with him. Friendship with a nearby Cub owner is likely to be beneficial to both of you. Once he knows you, and knows you are looking for a Cub, he may spot one for you that is available.

I did too! Sorry, I was so caught up in what I thought it was that I got carried away. I was surprised when Billyandmillie didn't comment since he's not far from the western end of the "Black Swamp".

Anyway... welcome again! :D :D

No Problem

Postby BackswampCub » Thu Nov 09, 2006 6:32 pm

No Problem everyone makes that mistake about this area. But I will give you a little insight to the area. It is nestled on the Onslow/Duplin County line of SE North Carolina. 30 minutes from Jacksonville. Jacksonville is home too Camp Lejune,Johnson,Geiger and New River Marine Corps Bases. Backswamp is also an hour from Wilmington NC which is second in film production behind Hollywood. Films such as The Crow, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I,II,and III, Cape Fear,I know what you did last summer,Richie Rich,Cyborg, and Kiss the Girls. Were filmed there to name a few. Also Dawsons Creek(Barf). That is my Rambling about my little neck of the woods.

And apparently, if I go out in the yard and holler loud across the woods, you'll probably hear it!
