jumper tabs

Postby George Willer » Thu Nov 09, 2006 1:18 pm

While I was there with the camera I thought to show my solution to an old problem... where in the !#$%^ can you attach a jumper cable or boost pack? Especially if the battery box is together. I made tabs from flattened copper pipe and made two good points to use. I hope others find this idea useful. It works good for me.

Great idea!. Often finding a place on the casting for the ground is difficult due to size/shape/paint. George, we should warn them about the potential problems drilling copper. The bit will grab it! Hand injuries are likely if that is the method for holding!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I use the nut on starter and the steering column(?) as the last connection. Be sure to shake hands with the gear shift and check throttle, choke and switch settings. Starter will energize with last connection. Be carefull!!

Can you charge a battery using this method with a trickle charger? Or do you just do this to start them. Very good Idea not to have to take your nicely painted battery box apart. :D Brandon.

Absolutely, Brandon!!!!!

The positive ground would feed through the ground cable / strap to the battery, and the negative connection goes right from the starter terminal to the negative battery post.

As long as your connections are good, clean, and tight, it's as good as charging right at the battery....

I like that idea, i'm going to use it too, but if you flaten it out and drill before you cut it off helps the hands.
Take a little time to play, you don't grow old as fast that way.

jumper tabs

Postby Larry Barb Dotson » Sat Nov 11, 2006 9:30 am

George,
I just took the battery charger off Barb's lo boy and thought I should rig something up like you did. I do have one starter bolt with no paint for a hook-up, but will probably do like you did.

Eh......

A quick jump...yup..not a problem....

I'd not leave it connected too long, however, as I'm not sure what the effects of the 12V would be on the Voltage regulator, etc....

It won't harm the starter, however......
