As most know, when the battery is disconnected the generator should be
polarize. This is done by momentarily touching the "Batt" terminal and
the "Gen" terminals together with a short jumper wire. Well this can be
a challenge especially if you have a cutout sitting on top of your
generator.
One solution is to run an extra short lead off the "Gen" terminal and
put a wire nut on it and attach to the backside of the wiring harness.
Then you can take a short jumper and temporarily touch to the battery
(-) lead, if 6V, on top of the starter or one could go all the way back to
to the battery.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, so please bear with me. I disconnected my battery to install a new box on it. I simply reconnected wires as previously and tractor will start and run. It will, however, not charge while running. While running, it is about at 0, but will go all the way to discharge if lights are put on, even with tractor running. Could this be the problem, or is there a likely other culprit? Thanks for the help.

The simple act of disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it, or a different one, should not require polarizing of the generator IF the connections were correct both times. Polarizing is harmless if done correctly. Polarizing is helpful only when done with the battery connected correctly and prior to starting the engine. Polarizing is required if the generator is removed from the tractor for any sort of repairs or if the "motoring" test is done with the generator.

I agree that simply disconnecting and reconnecting a battery shouldn't cause the generator to need polarizing, but it does occasionally happen. I believe we have one member that has to polarize his on a regular basis, and has installed a push button to do it.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I would say yes, if it was charging before. I disconnected Bette battery to switch pull on/off switches. With everything hooked back up, it wasnt charging. SO i had to the jumper thing on the cut out. Kinda tricky with the hood on and manifold HOT.
