Eugene, you picked up what I saw. There looks like a lot of work to stop all the leaks. When I buy I look at the implements that come with the tractor, factor in the cost or sale price of those and then I determine what I will pay. I try to keep a running tractor in the 1100 to 1200 range if it runs good and does not require a lot of work. For this one I would figure in the implements and set the tractor at about 500. It needs a lot of work.

Cecil.

I have this tractor needing all new seals, major overhaul, clutch and throwout bearing, brakes, radiator, perhaps a head, plus missing parts.

The logo on the hood below the radiator cap would indicate considerable use as a mower tractor.

If you read the ytmag forum, the major parts are from several different years.

I value this as a parts tractor.

My problem is I get sentimental when I see one that needs a home. The worse they are the better I seem to like it. I guess I just like the challange of making them all better again. The last one I did had been rolled over and sat outside apart for 7 years. I did get to do my first valve job including reaming the seats. It was fun and what a joy when I hit the starter and it turned over 3 times and was running.

Cub value... thanks...

Postby Creto » Fri Dec 08, 2006 11:53 am

Thanks all for the great response. A couple comments:
Casting numbers for the engine are 251341 R2 with a big "L" next to it. The other code is 2*8*T. The Trans is 351686 R1 11*3*R. The box casting by the hydraulic arms is 350719 R1 3*12*L. I thought that box piece could be an older casting than the others... The ID plate is missing and I couldn't find a SN anywhere else. It runs well and does not smoke. I think I did see a weld at the front by the steering box as I saw mentioned on this board as a bad area.

Reversed tire...

Postby Creto » Fri Dec 08, 2006 1:09 pm

I bought my wife's family tractor from her uncle. '52 Case SC bought new and used on an Adirondack farm as big garden tractor, sap getter, log skidder and God only knows what else. The tractor was siezed and I got it running like a champ. It had a reversed tire and I found out why at that time. I can picture old Gramp DeLarm back in the woods in 2 feet of snow skidding logs and getting in all kinds of trouble... I didn't notice the Cub's till I looked at the pictures.. Thanks again, C.

One more thing..

This tractor does get used every summer to mow about a 15 acre field and does other odd jobs around the property... C.

Creto,

Over on ytmag, I see someone translated the date codes for you. Looks like the cub is built from parts, or was in a major accident that required replacing several major castings. It's a "mutt" and there's no way to tell what year it was originally. The hood is certainly from the '47-'54 range.

Actually, the hood and panel are long eared and therefore from prior to mid 1949.

It's definitely a mutt with all the different year parts, '48 to '66.

Creto:

First, Image to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D

I have been paying attention to this thread, but haven't been able to post, cause of 1400 other things I have been doing at the same time.. and wimmen say men can't multi-task... harruumphhhh Image.

Now, from looking at this tractor, I am sort of agreeing with Cecil. It is a forlorn lookin critter, that needs a lot of TLC.. and the mower is not bad, and the high-crop rims are a bonus. But for me.. max on this one is probably $1,000.00 Cdn, including all that stuff.. but.. I probably would offer $750.00 Cdn, which is about $550.00US or so.. the mutt factor is kinda interesting too.

Let us know what you decide to do..

Ok, so here is the spiel Image:

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.

IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's :?: . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.

In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.

Oh, and while the program still lasts.. you might want to check the Announcement: Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer - On-Line Form thread at the top of the Cub Forum and send away for the new style safety cap before that program runs out as well.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, Image to the Cub FamilyImage :D
