worn out or cracked blocks

Postby Clem » Wed Dec 13, 2006 2:11 pm

What do you do with a block that is no good? Is there a use for it? I though about taking one to school for the tech lab.

Clem,

It matters a lot what is wrong with it. Can you be more specific?

Cracks can be repaired unless the crack is in the cylinder then it needs to be sleeved. They make some good quality cast iron arc welding rod now too.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

 I fix them. I do what ever it takes to preserve The C60. I just may not put it back in it's original spots, a cub engine with cracked ear may end up on a stationary plant or a 154 for an example

I have a couple, one has worn cylinders one with a nasty gouge, and the other block has been totally redone and was dropped by a previous owner and one of the ears busted off, I believe I still have the part.

I was just wondering in general though if they were worth fixing up or just dumping, when they go bad.

Clem,

Maybe you could investigate an internal mechanical repair of the busted ear. I plan to make such a repair to the Cub I got from up your way, possibly this winter of next spring. When I do I plan to well document it as a guide to others. It won't be welded.

I wouldn't make such a repair to an engine that needed other expensive work but it makes sense to me to salvage one that is in otherwise good condition. :)

If you want to dump it, dump it my way!

GEORGE, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW YOU ARE GOING TO MECHANICALLY FIX THE EARS ON THE BLOCK. IF YOU HAVE THE TIME WILL YOU GO AHEAD AND EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS ON WHAT YOU HAVE IN MIND.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm really interested in GW's fix as well.
