Just how much can a cub tug?

Postby wvpolekat » Sat Dec 23, 2006 8:39 am

I think this could be a real hoot to have around and establish just how much a cub can tug...

The pull sled our local antique tractor club uses weighs 16,500lbs. My cub spins a bit to get it moving, but it will pull it! 8)

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

The weight of the sled is a vertical load while the towing force is horizontal so long as all is on level surface. Nebraska tested a 1947 Cub and measured a horizontal pull of 1,596#. My source does not reveal how much ballast, such as wheel weights, was added. But the horizontal pull in the Nebraska tests has always been less than the weight of the tractor as tested- for all brands of tractors . The 1956 Cub horizontal pull force was 1,605#. The source says 498# of weight added to EACH rear wheel, but I suspect that to be a misprint as the total weight is listed as 1,895#. The total of added weight probably was the 498#. Just an opinion, the Cubs running today are unlikely to do better as these were in prime condition for the tests. But the figures also show a remarkable consistency of pulling force.

Ya, its physics, horizontal force cannot exceed gravitational force. I think I learned that in physics?

It seems like a lot of the extractions from the Nebraska tests make them hard to see the correct data. Wendel's book evidently tried to make the reading more interesting by wording things differently from one test to the next.

In the 1947 Cub test, maximum pull of 1596# was obtained with 8x24 tires with 582# of added weight on EACH rear tire. The total weight (with driver) was 2701# (2018# rear). The tractor weighed 1539# in the unweighted test.

In the 1956 Cub test, maximum pull of 1605# was obtained with 8x24 tires with 498# of added weight on EACH rear tire. The total weight (with driver) was 2891# (2104# rear). The tractor weighed 1895# in the unweighted test.

Notice how much more the '56 weighed than the '47 (1895-1539=356#). The '47 tractor was pretty basic while the '56 had more typical equipment for the time. Electric S&L - 111, Hydraulics - 82. It probably had Fast-Hitch too, which would about cover the rest of the difference.

Are we talking laboratory environmenmt (nebraska Test) pulling or just down out dirty TRACTOR PULLING. Its like day and night. Ive never seen a Cub hooked to a transfer sled, but I bet it would do pretty good in its weight class. It would probably have to stay in the 2000#under class- I wouldnt want to have that front end come off the ground and slam back down too many times.
