Throw Out Bearing Grease Fitting, What's It Grease?

Postby Brandon Webb » Mon Jan 01, 2007 5:40 pm

There's a grease fitting on the throw out bearing. Had one out today, took the grease gun to it, and the only place grease came out was a small hole in the top. Is it supposed to grease the graphite? Does it come out of the inside or? Thanks Brandon.

Brian, the grease sets in the cavity behind the graphite and the oil slowly separates from the wax base and seeps into the graphite form the rear. When you grease it yearly you push out the old wax and replace it with fresh grease. As a side note, do not use high temp grease, it does not seperate as easily.

John I have heard you say that before.... so I guess wheel bearing grease is no good? Sounds like I need a 3rd grease gun?

That may be a good idea. I prefer the cheapest grease I cna find for the throwout, since it usually separates easier.

Brandon, They will wear out much sooner if they are not greased on occasion. I gues it want such a bad design it has lasted a year or two.

When you first install a new TOB, do you just fill the fitting until grease comes out the top or do you apply grease to the graphite?

Thanks

Grafite is a dry lubricant . The grease adds life to it , suck as the throwout bearing.

I fill it with grease, and also wipe a very thin layer over the face, but if you buy the IH bearing rather than aftermarket, wiping it isn't really needed, because they are impregnated with oil already. All the aftermarket ones I've seen were shipped dry.

They also make a winter weight grease that is thinner than the regular grease (has more oil in it). I have oppened them up in the summer and seen the oil seperating out on top of the tube. It might be a good  to use it for that bearing. I usually keep a grease gun with the winter grease for fitting that are hard to grease with the regular grease.
