I finally got everything out and the countershaft front bearing is missing it's bearing cage and the R-1 shifter rail is broke. I looked over on TM and wouldn't you know it the one i need is sold.
Probably going to need to replace more bearings when i get all the muck and grease out so i can inspect them better. I did notice quite a bit of play in the front input bearing. I sure like getting grease everywhere.

2 B,
I assume you are referring to the trans. spline input shaft. With that
in mind:
1. The spline shaft should pull out of the trans. case toward the front.
2. Watch carefully where the bearing shields are located as I know
the front of the trans case has a lip machined in it for the frt bearing.
3. Also, you might consider replacing the frt trans input shaft bearing
with a fully sealed one (a Forum guru suggested that and said the
sealed bearings are rated at full load for 3800 hrs) This would
just about eliminate any trans lube leaking from the front seal.
I don't know if I'm even on the right track with this, but hope it may help.

Bill, i was refering to the rear spline input shaft bearing shields. I went ahead and knocked to rear bearing and shield so i could inspect the bearing.
someone had installed a shield bearing for the front spline input shaft but it has major wear. It only had the shield on the one side and it was installed in towards the gears. I assume due to not being a sealed bearing and improper lubrication contributed to its failure. Maybe i'm wrong and that was the proper way of installing it.
But all the bearing have rough spots/pits so looks like a complete overhaul for the tranny.

2B,
If you'll note, there is an oil passage drilled in the trans case to drip oil
into the frt bearing. The bearing was correctly installed, just lots of
wear and tear, not lack of lube.
Guess I got lucky on mine as only bearings to replace were the input
shaft front bearing and PTO shaft bearing. All else was in good order.
Or I'll find out when I get the thing running again !!

I hadn't noticed the oil passage as i'm still degreasing/crud. this was a mess, not only was it full up to the input shaft with moisture and lube, it also had gobs of axle grease on top of that.
with it being so full and the front seal bad it deposited the same gooey mixture in the bell housing tube and right axle tube. luckily it did not get on the brakes.
where would you get a sealed bearing # to replace the front input shaft bearing. I just wonder if it would be worth a trip to a bearing place to get the bearings. it would be quite a drive and most of a day to find one and then if they were not in stock another trip to go get them. I don't know if iyt would save enought money to warrent the extra fuel and time.
