resistor?

Postby freebird » Fri Jan 12, 2007 2:33 pm

Just saw a ceramic resistor listed on ebay for a lo-boy cub. My question is, does my 56 require one? I cannot remember ever having seen one when i replace the wiring harness.

A link or number for the eBay item was not posted. 250070951170 . That resistor is for tractors equipped with alternators. It is installed in the conductor to the exciter terminal on the alternator. It permits enough current to the alternator to start the charging. Once the alternator is charging, it sends current back through the same conductor. The resistor passes too little current for the ignition to continue to function from the feedback from the alternator. The indicator light on some vehicles is just another form of resistor and is installed in the same conductor. Diodes are also used. I like the resistor as it is the most durable of the three. The one on eBay would cost $10.00 minimum. I think the last I bought at the electronics store were two for a dollar. I did have to fabricate my own mount. That resistor does not adapt the ignition coil for use on 12 volt systems.
