Hey fellas, this original post is over a year old. It appears the motor is done and he is now requesting info on the radiator installation

Any engine can be rebuilt. A GOOD machinist will tell you whether it should be rebuilt or not. A second opinion should be considered.

good luck on mounting the radiator
get the bolts tight enough without over tightening
a long extension that is taller than the radiator will be your friend esp for the bolts towards the fan

next question: this tractor had an IH carburetor before, but it seems that the person who tore it down wanted to replace the carburetor, so now there's a Zenith -- looking brand new -- in the parts collection. It seems like it should be possible to fit where the IH was before -- he even got a new intake air hose that fits. However, the top (manifold) flange is obviously bigger on the Zenith, but the holes look like they match up. Is it just a matter of placing a gasket between the two different-sized flanges and bolting on? Also, the choke rod is on the inside (engine side) of the carburetor, but this Zenith carb has only a shaft, no fitting for the rod, on that side. There would appear to be a fitting missing here -- what is it?

What's missing is the choke lever, shown here in the lower right of this photo of an IH carb. Same part is used on the Zenith.

These levers are somewhat difficult to find and are expensive when you do. Here's a good substitute.

I noticed that the size of the zenith intake is larger than the one on the IH carb. You might have to get a different size intake hose.

Yes, I already have a molded air intake hose that replaces the entire pipe-and-hose from the air cleaner and is wider at the carb end for the Zenith.

One more question: before starting up an engine that has been drained of oil, I assume that the oil pump needs to be primed. I note that there is a plug apparently for that purpose. What is the procedure for priming the oil pump?

Thanks,
Bob

Remove the plug and put about a 1/4 cup of oil in the pump. Turn the engine about 1/2 turn then add another 1/4 cup. This will prime the oil pump As well as lube the rod and main bearings.

Isn't it fun getting them running after a long slumber? You look like you were having a BLAST up on that tractor. Congrats on getting it fixed!

Wow, I really enjoyed your video. Very glad you got the ol'gal running. I took a look at your engine photo's, that rod journal looked pretty rough. Did you have to have the crank turned ? Although, the cylinders looked to be in pretty good shape, appeared to be very little ridge at the tops. Just wondering, did you just replace with new stock rings ?

I didn't have the crank turned -- just one journal was damaged, and I polished it with a combination of extremely fine grit abrasive cloth and a Dremel rotary tool with polishing compound. The rings are standard.

If I were to have to do this project again (remember, I didn't start this one, I was just presented with my tractor with the engine taken apart but not removed -- the valves had already been replaced -- and a collection of replacement parts), I would probably just remove the engine and bring it to a shop. I'm grateful for the experience, but don't feel the need to experience it a second time. Because I live over 200 miles away, it took almost two years elapsed time.

I really appreciate this forum and the advice and information you all provided. Thanks!

One more question: when rebuilding, I installed a Zenith carb instead of the original IH (I had no choice -- the guy who took it apart got a replacement and returned the core!).

I just noticed (took me a long time -- didn't use it over the winter) that the oil filler/dipstick cap is really hard to remove with the gas line position of the Zenith carb. I can do it, but it feels like I'm about to bend something. Did I do something wrong?

Bob:

Congrats on getting the Engine rebuilt :applause: I imagine you are pretty pleased with that. Can't help with the carb as I only know about the IH Updraft ones. Zenith is not something I wanna play with. Saw one here, and that was enough. :big give up:

Carl or one of the others will be along presently...
