Farmall Cub

I had a bit of time this morning so I took another look at Frank.
Installed, battery, carb, filled rad again.
Fired right up, great oil pressure, running smooth.
For the very first time, I climbed on and pressed on the clutch.
Lots of rattling noise from the clutch, and I could not get it depressed enough to get into gear. When I finally pressed down hard enough, the tractor stalled. Released the clutch and fired back up.

Sooooooo.....I guess for now I won't be taking Frank for a test run.
Anybody have any ideas what might be happening? Maybe the clutch is shoe-packed? I'll have alook in the hand hole after lunch and try to see what is going on.

Sounds like a bad throw-out bearing.

Yeah, I think you are right,
Looking through the hand hole you can see the throwout bearing face is in bad shape, and things is a bit floppy with it.

I guess that means I'll have to split Frank in half?

Any guess for price of new bearing?

I think my brother-in-law George, said that it cost him 40 or 50 bucks Cdn at the CaseIH Dealer for the graphite block bearing a couple of years ago, but I could be off by a bit. Ifn you want to upgrade, try NTN Bearings or Canada Bearing. Shouldn't be all that much.

Thanks for looking that up. That part number I'm guessing is the IH part number? I'll call Chas Richards with the number and see what he says for price. They are very good with shipping and availability. Plus I am now going to try sticking to IH parts as they are of better quality, especially carb parts, and gaskets. For the last couple weeks I was looking forward to this day when I would take Frank for the test run. What a downer when I could not even leave the shop. Looks like a split job now, and that's still just to test. The tranny looks very good inside, and it rolls nice. I don't expect too much wrong after this.

Hoping to get a digital camera soon, maybe under the tree, so I can share some pics.

Should get a new Throw-out bearing in the mail soon. $103Cdn.
The original is broken in a couple spots, that is, the graphite block, so it is not pushing evenly on all the clutch fingers. I also notice all 3 jamb nuts are missing off the adjusters, so I'll have to scare something up for those.
