as i posted on rusty gas tank problem (findoggy i think) strap on a1 or 2 gallon tank off a riding mower, run direct to carb with gas proof rubber line. i have plowed 4 differant snowfalls with this setup, will deal with original tank this summer. (more snow mondy nite)--------Tom
Well so far there is nothing in the line, the filter screen is clear, the inlet screen is clear.
It has to be with the float but that seemed ok. It moved freely it did not appear to be full of fuel.
Tonight I'm tearing the carb down and seeing what's inside.
And of course it just started snowing here again!

Well 4 or 5 inches of snow since yesterday. I did get the carb opened up and did some cleaning. My near by dealer only had the gasket so I installed that. It looks like the float needle is seating right or it's the wrong one. I adjusted the float as best as I could and at 9pm I fired her up and was able to plow with some pretty good power. It did stall out on me about 4 times in an hour. Definetly starving out. The butterflies are real bad, rust and malformed. Previous owner or owners must have done some filing on them. It looks like I may have to invest in a new or rebuilt carb.
But that's better then just watching it sit in the garage. Seat time is what it's all about!!!!
Well that lasted a day! It's back to doing it again and now I have the same problem that a few others have noted. It's stuck in reverse gear.
I can not get it into any other gear. Tonight will be get out the work lights and freeze my *** off trying to figure this out. I've never had the cover on the trans opened so with the way it usually works for me is that there will be one bolt that won't come loose.
And as usual it's -6 this morning and she's sitting out in the driveway!
the transmission stuck in reverse is a common problem. the cure is simple (except for the cold), remove the bolts that hold the shift tower to the trans, and inside you will see the shifting forks.
you will see where the fork ears are spread open to the point of not allowing the rev gear to return to neutral.
a pair of pliers to return the fork ears to the original position will correct the problem.

steve; you'll see the situation immediately when you remove the shift tower. the bottom of the shift lever is a ball that works an opposite 'H' pattern. this ball fits into a U shaped steel bracket on each side which moves the shifting forks. one is for 1st and rev, the other for 2nd and third. you'll see that the rev/first U is bent. simply straighten it up so the ball fits in there without excess play. Remember that everything is opposite from the direction of shifter movement.

How's the weather by you. It was -6 this morning and tomorrow we're suppose toget more snow. Nothing as bad as you've had out there.
Thanks to everyone. The forks were not bent. The ball was only in the 2 and 3rd gear fork. Simple fix but it took 45 min to get it running long enough to get back in the garage. Parts arrive Friday for the carb and I'll go from there.
Thanks again, this is a fantastic group of people and a great site. I'm hoping on visitin Cubarama but not with my 49er I don't have a trailer or a truck big enough to haul it. But I hope to go and meet some of you.
Well I rebuilt the carb today. I polished out the main venturi and cleand out all the ports. I replaced the fuel strainer and fuel line.
She fired right up one small adjustment and prceeded to plow for an hour and a half without any problems!
