Battery Drain

The other day while working on 52 cub resoration I left the ignition switch on and it completely drained the battery. So I hooked the battery charger up to it in the 6 volt position and charged the battery. Now when I hook the battery up the annmeter bottoms out on the discharge side if I unhook the A terminal on the generator it commes back up. the generator has been rebuilt and the voltage regulator is brand new before I left the switch on I was showing a good charge with the tractor running.
Would appreciate some help.

Hi Wendell,

I'm not much on electrically ststems but something you might try is to re-polarize the generator. I had to do this on mine one time to get it to charge the battery again.
You can read about this procedure in the GSS 1012 page #26.
You just run a jumper from the battery post of the regualtor to the A termial of the generator, momentarily.

You may have burnt (stuck) the points on the voltage regulator.

I don't know why leaving the switch on would have caused it, but as Bigdog said, it would appear that the cutout relay in the regulator is stuck closed.

First, I don't know about yours, but my battery doesn't have a drain...it is solid on the bottom. Maybe I'll install one, it would come in handy when changing out the electricity.

Seriously, if your engine stops with the points in the closed position, don't you now have a nice little circuit that will definitely drain your battery when the ignition switch in on?

Sure will, and usually results in the points needing replaced, either from the spring loosing tension from the heat, or due to the contacts being burned. Can get the coil pretty hot also. He also has a problem that when he reconnects the wire at the generator the amp meter goes all the way to discharge, which would indicate a stuck contact in the voltage regulator.

Got an e-mail from Wendell last night confirming stuck points in the regulator. He un-stuck them, & cleaned them. It cured his discharge condition.

Y.D., I dont know how you got so wise. Perhaps you learned many years ago like I did. You were out parked with your girlfriend/s late one night with your radio on (Mood-Music) and when you decided to leave your car would not start. That was how I learned not to have the radio on unless the guage showed no discharge to begin with.
