Here are some photos of the wear that's showing. I'm not sure what caused it. Any advice?

Governor and oil seal

Steve,

I can see the wear area on the oil seal. Does the governor shaft also have some rough areas? If yes, the root cause of this must be identified and corrected. Not sure what would cause this - excessive vibration maybe? It is always a good idea to put a thin coating of oil on a new seal. Light action with an emory cloth could help take out minor rough spots on the shaft.,,,,,Bill V.

Position seal 23/32 from ignition mounting flange and square.
Look at this link down toward the last page.

The seal was seated to deep in the mouning flange, clean up any rough spots on the shaft, andfollow Jim's advice

Looks like this is the answer to why there is oil coming out of me speedo hole. how easy is it to get that seal out? I have a shop manual and it shows it fairly good, but im not sure about when it talks about marking the teeth with chalk? are there not already marks on the gears?

tabaccofarmer,
There are punch marks on each gear which are very hard to see especially when putting the governor back in. Chalk marks are much easier to see. Make sure #1 cyclinder is TDC then mark the 2 gears.

It may be best to read H.L. Chauvin's how to at this link: http://farmallcub.com/HLChauvin.htm

Gov wear

Steve,
I had the same wear on my gov when I pulled it apart. I ordered a bushing set from IH(don't have number ) and rebushed shaft which I assumed might have helped cause wear. Then a speedi sleeve from NAPA(no number either) and finished it off nicely. Only thing on the sleeve they didn't have one that was short enough and covered the teeth area. Had machine shop put newly sleeved shaft on a lathe and they shortened to proper height. Hope this helps you.

When looking at Steve's pic. of the seal showing where it had apparently been rubbing the gear teeth it also appears that this seal had been installed backwards. :? As we learned in an earlier post in the last week the side of the seal with the friction spring visible around the perimeter of the rubber should go toward the oil supply/reservoir, or the governor in this case.

What is a speedy sleeve? Also how do you disassemble the governor?

No it was installed as you descibed.
