have a cub that makes a noise in first and reverse, sounds like gears hitting each other, but not in second or third. anyone else had this problem before? Now have tractor split and hate to put it together again without repairing the problem.

Check your first / reverse slider gear. Sounds like you may have a chipped or broken tooth.

tglass,

I agree with Bigdog....when I got my Cub, 2nd and 3rd had clatter in them. After we split her, we found a tooth missing. :(

Yup, glad I asked and really apreciate the help. Chipped teeth were on the bottom till I turned the shaft.

Don't forget to check your clutch/trans shaft for out of round. It'l make your gears run eccentric. Sometimes when a gear is banged hard, it can bend the shaft.
