What you describe sounds like the original lube... the "good stuff". What hasn't been mentioned for a reason for it being overfilled is often WATER. If you have water in the case, with some lubes it doesn't mix, but just lays on the bottom, raising the level. The advice to change it is good, but you can easily check for water. Loosen the drain plug enough that something comes out around the threads. If it isn't oil, change it.
