Farmall Cub

I've been thinking about going with a straight pipe on my newest cub. John has a good point about the pipe being too short and so close to the gas tank. How much above the hood should the pipe be to be safer. I'm also wondering about the spark arresting capabilities of the muffler. I've never seen a spark out of my '49 and my '74 has the underslung exhaust. Has there been any problems in this area? Never seen it mentioned here. Concerning the cub, anyway.

If you want to use a straight pipe, get a piec of 1" sched. 40 pipe about 36 to 40"long. You'll end up with an exhaust approximately equal in length to the standard pipe and muffler. This will also help keep exhaust fumes out of your face when you're downwind.

Used to run straight pipes, and later on Cherry Bomb mufflers on our Hs when I was younger on the farm and really liked them. Tried a straight pipe on my 48 cub when I rebuilt it about 16 years ago, and the exhast had a kind of "sharp" report that hurt my ears, so I went back to a standard muffler.

If you put a 90 deg. bend in the pipe away from the driver (Tip facing the front of tractor) it does wonders for the drivers ears.

I have also seen mufflers mounted horzontal with stand-offs on the side of the hood with a 90 degree bend out to the side (Kinda - kuboto like exhaust) for a low profile. This also keeps water out.
