starter kicks out because.....

Awhile back I wrote a post about the Cub starter kicking out before the engine started. This on the very pretty - supposedly rebuilt by some recent p/o - 49 I bought. Yep, looked nice on the outside but once I got to checking the basics found that the starter problem and general lack of power were, you guessed it, low compression. Compression ranged from 90 in # 1 to as low as 25 in #2 (burnt exhaust valve). Starter was kicking out everytime it got to the non-compression stroke on # 2. That's the bad news.

The good news is the local dealer had all the parts on the shelf and with just a set of new rings, new exhaust valves, new clutch and new brakes it's a fire breathing monster that I can actually stop!

What a great little engine to work on...and isn't it nice when you crank something like this over and it just fires right up?!

Cheers all - I'm gonna go terrorize my suburban neighbors with the little farm tractor!

:) :D

Congratulations, and have fun SAFELY.

You bet! And fear not, I know machines don't think, they just go and will just as well run you down as do the intended work if you aren't careful! I'll tell you though, that little engine just sounds absolutely perfect! Fred

Fred, I see you also have a Whizzer! I haven't been on one of those in quite a while! As John said, have fun! Be safe!

BD and Fred:

Just what pray tell exactly is a Whizzer? Pic would be nice....

Rudi, a Whizzer is a motorized bicycle.

Oh, ok. I have seen a few of them over the years.... always thought they were kind of neat. Not quite a bike any more but then again, not quite a motorcycle either!

Actually, the Whizzer was a bicycle with the motor added. Not at all like the mo-peds that came later.

Yeah, but that's a picture of a new Whizzer...If I had half a brain and could figure out how to insert a picture you'd see that mine is definitely OLD! It's a long way from running..just dragged it out of a barn a few months ago...it had been leaning against the wall in the same spot for 50 years. Anyway, another site to see the original Whizzers is: http://www.geocities.com/whizzer_17044/index.html I had never seen one until I found this thing in the barn....had to have it!

BD: Have you ever ridden a Whizzer? Scary little things. My best friend had one back in the late 50s and early 60s. Ran pretty good but really hard to stop.

Hi Pop! Yes, I have ridden a whizzer. Tons of fun when you're about 12-13. But you're right, they don't stop well.
Funny, it seems you don't remember much about my childhood......

BD: What I do remember is that Maw and I moved while you were at school one day and it took you almost a week to find us. Shoulda moved further away I guess.

Bigdog,

:( :) At least you didn't get a suit case for your high school graduation present.
I sure think there was a message in that one!
