WICO Mag on cub, help needed

My '49 has the WICO magneto as described in the engine group of the parts manual (very lightly). As I am going through the complete maintenance for the first time, I would like to put in new points and condenser and time the beast. However, I can find no information on how to get parts or how to adjust this magneto - let alone why it is on some cubs. Any and all information on this magneto as it pertains to cubs would be appreciated.

Binder Books is a good source for hard copies of the parts book and service manual. they are at http://www.binderbooks.com/

if your mag doesn't work anymore Call Mark @ Marks Magneto's 860-887-1094 he rebuilds them.

you have a J4 mag that was standard equipment on the cub untill mid 1950, i believe. distributer ignition was a popular option from the first cub as it was marketed as the 'latest' technology. but many people preferred the mag early on as it did not require a battery to start.

Scott, are you sure it is a Wico mag, and not a J4? So far as I know the Wico was only used on the ealry 47 models. A 49 should have had an IH J4 mag. The J4 has a lead that comes out of the cas on top and goes to the distributer cap. the Wico coil is under the cap and doesn't have the extra high tension lead. Possibility yours may have been changed at sometime.

If you do in fact have the J4 magneto, I just bought a set of points and condenser for mine. I got them at Car Quest. The part numbers are IH2958 for the points and IH-109 for the condenser, these are Car Quest part numbers.

Yes it is a WICO mag. No center lead - rather an internal line to the coil. I have all the manuals from Binder. The WICO is mentioned in the parts manual, but not the service manual. Surprisingly there is no mention of the WICO in the electrical service bulletin either. My Cub runs fine, but I would like to know how to work on the mag I have. My serial number maps to a '49, but perhaps the WICO was swapped on some time in the past. This is the first I have heard that they were standard on the earliest tractors - I had been told that many cold weather ones came equipped with WICO. If anyone has a manual for an early tractor that talks about the WICO mag, I would like to get a copy of the relevant sections from you. Thanks.

PS Just talked with the folks at Montage enterprises about Mott mower parts - very helpful people and much cheaper than I expected. I can replace 10 lost cutters along with connectors for under $20. That should tell me if I need to have the shaft straightened or not. I knew a few were missing but did not realize 10 were gone - 7 of them on one end, 3 on the other. I imagine that may play a role in the excessive vibration I was getting.

shoot, John.. i didn't know there was any other mag than the J4 for the cub's.

Scott,

I have a Wico X on a tractor that doesn't show it in the manuals either. There are 4 different mags listed for a Case SC, but the Wico isn't one of them. I played it by ear to get the tractor running a few years ago and it has performed flawlessly ever since. It's my pulling tractor.

Scott, I can't find anything to confirm it, but I think (that's dangerous) I remember reading that the J4 replaced the Wico sometime in late 47. Ufortunately my memeory has been known to be undependable at times.

The famous picture of # 501 shows a J-4 magneto. The Wico isn't in the early parts book, but is in the late. The part number suggests maybe a mid-'50s date. My PM Manual from '61 covers the Wico magneto for the 240 and 340 but not the Cub. I assume the Wico was made available when a magneto was needed after the J-4 was no longer being produced. I believe Binder Books has the PM Manual.

By the way, the point gap should be .015.

My 49 has the Wico mag on it to. I wasn't able to find to much info on the Wico mag for the cub either.
