New Woods 59 on old Loboy, revisited

AFter puchasing a Woods 59 new last fall (installation on my '55 Loboy I described here), I've now had a chance to try it out...and the mowing experience is quite satisfactory. This is a heavy-duty unit--nothing "cheap aftermarket" about it at all. I like the fact that it is designed to lessen tension on the V-belt when the unit is lifted. The tractor has ample power (I was concerned about that) and second gear will handle very heavy grass on all but the steepest upgrade. Touch control yields quick response, a good thing because the tractor is difficult to stop quickly when mowing due to lack of blade clutch. Fortunately, most of my mowing is in a field. However, the mowing of the front lawn (usually handled by my Cadet 108) also works well. The cut is even and attractive if one takes care not to turn too sharply as the front tires tend to dig in a bit (I believe that in later Cubs this problem was corrected). The casters are close to the front wheels, but don't cause a problem (my front end adjustment is balky, like most others). My previous tractors have all been single-cylinder air-cooled, including the '74 Cadet 108 and an '83 Power King. This Cub with its four-cylinder water-cooled engine is so much more quiet and smooth! I don't even feel that I need to use my usual hearing protection. All in all, the mower works well--yields good seat time. Pics...

PS I apologize for those slightly-too-large pic--I tried hard not to have that happen, but I guess I need more practice...

Jeff nice setup. How much did it cost for the mower and how hard was it to mount?

Well, it warn't cheap. The mower w/casters was just over $1300 from a dealer in this area last fall (although I believe that was a good price). Installation went pretty well, but the mower weighs 335 lbs and quick removal/re-attachment is for someone with more oomph than I have. Installation is also more involved if tractor is equipped w/fasthitch, which mine is. There is a lot of latitude in the installation for height and fore-and-aft positioning, and it takes a while to get the right combination so that you can mow at the desired height, lift the unit up high enough when transporting, and still provide for proper alignment of the v-belt. I can still use the trailer hitch and carry-all when the mower is on, just can't lift 'em up as high (or the left caster will punch out the Touch control pump).

Hi Jeff
Nice tractor and mower setup. I was wondering if you have or use the safety type fuel cap when you mow, and just swaped it out for those great photos? Paul K. in N.H.

Hello Jeff

Thanks for the great pictures.

You have a beautiful mowing set up. I like your turf tires. Are the front ones trailer tires? Please tell me what kind of tires these are and where you found them.

Thanks

Mike

JEFF,
GREAT LOOKING SET-UP :!: YOU RECEIVED AN EXCELLENT PRICE ON THE WOODS 59. I PRICED THE SAME HERE IN TEXAS AND THEY WERE ASKING AROUND $1600.00 AS FAR AS TIRES CUTTING THE TURF ON TURNS. IF YOU GET AWAY FROM THE MORE AGGRESSIVE THREE RIBBED FRONT TIRES AND FIND THE SMOOTHER FRONT TURF TIRES YOU FIND THEY WORK A LOT BETTER. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Paul, the fuel cap is the one that came on the tractor; I don't have any other, or know about the safety type. Is that something I should have? Mike, the front tires are the original ones, I believe, and they are just pretty well worn down. I may indeed swap them out for some softer, "turfier" types. The rears are the ones I purchased from Miller Tire a couple of months ago, and at that time I submitted a post about their above-and-beyond-outstanding service. I still have the original Goodrich Silvertown ag rears on rims.

Jeff:

Click here : Free Gas Cap.

Have your serial number in hand, fill out the form and in 4 to 5 weeks you will have your new replacement Gas Cap :D

Course, 4 to 5 weeks is in the states. In Canada it could be 4 to 5 months
