George, right on the money (as always.)

That first bend is a doozy.
I always allow extra mateial on both ends.
Much easier to bend then cut than to have to do the task twice.

...another option would be to fill the end of the 5/16" steel tube with lead solder or other low melt alloy, create the bend, and melt the solder out of the tube.
