Farmall Cub

So I was told to fix the gear shift lever on my landlord's 50's era Farmall Cub.

The rod broke about 4" from the end that is in the gear box. Appears to have been broken and brazed back together at some point. I don't know why the gear shifter broke the second time. Hopefully it was a repair job that wore out and not a problem with the gear box.

The only thing is, I think the domed part on my gear shift lever is hollow. That one appears to be solid.

Also, I can't really get the lever out of the plate that covers the gear box that the lever goes through. There is a metal piece that appears to be pressed in and retaining it. Any advice for removing it?

Josh, Before you go thru all the cotortions of replaceing the lever, I suggest you check with one of the sponsors for a complete used trans top. Probably alot simpler and maybe cheaper. Bob

Looks a little rough for $90.

I'm a good mechanic so and I can't imagine removing the rod is too difficult. I just didn't try very hard because I didn't want to damage the gear box cover plate. If I can set-up axle gears I'm sure I can handle this.

Do you recommend any other places to look for the assembly?

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. I'll attempt to replace just the lever but if that doesn't work out I know I can buy the assembly.

I'm still confused as to why the one pictured on the TM Tractor Parts website doesn't have a hollow domed out area where it contacts the gear box top cover plate.

Josh, I'm not sure if this will help, but if you look at George's pictures... part # 11 (the shifter rod) is inserted from the bottom of part # 10 (the transmission cover), then part #9 (the hollow half sphere) slides on from the top of the shifter rod.

I just took mine completely apart a week ago. You have to carefully bang out the cup from the assembly. It has a tab on it as well so be careful not to break it. The dome on mine was broke so I welded it back together and the hole assembly is now good as new. As for the TM replacement, I believe the dome is solid because that was a weak spot on the original.

Here is one from ebay that didn't sell. The seller is very reputable. You might get a good price quote.

the replacment shifters offered by some are solid because they are made cheaper than having them stamped. the extra weight may pose a problem. It may tend to push down on the H pattern guide that holds the shifter into place.It may require a spot weld to make sure it stays in position. But I havent had that problem yet.
