Freeing stuck engine

I just saw this idea on the Red Power discussion forum. It was posted by the King-of-Obsolete. He uses it to free stuck crawler engines in Canada where he does winter freighting. While it would cost an old starter, it looks like it should work on many tractors, not just the TD-6 crawler he was using it on. I assume the drive is welded solid. KOO calls it a Bar Starter. Many of his "Cat Train" stories are very interesting.

I saw this too. Looks like a pretty good idea. You probably have a lot better contact on the ring gear than when using a pry bar, a lot more leverage too.

One thing about using this approach on other engines is that the larger engine's starters have a middle bearing in the starter (shows in this picture). Without the middle bearing, building one of these is a little trickier.

If the engine starts you would have to be real fast removing the starter.

To build one of these for a cub is easy if you have a old starter & grinder & welder.
Cut the armiture off at the end of the windings.
Weld a piece of good steel rod to it the same size as the rear bushing.
Cut just the very end of th rear bushing cover off .
put the starter back to gether with rod sticking out the back of the starter.
Weld what ever size nut on that you like.
Built one of these.
I use it to roll the eng. over when in frame rebuilding.
I have used ti to help in freeing up a stuck eng. on a 62 cub low boy.
You just have to becarful as you can damage the ring gear.

What about welding the shaft solid where the drive bolts to the starter, then you would have the support of the drive bushing and the front starter bearing.

Sounds like a real good gizmo - specially since Jethro is still stuck....
