Farmall Cub

I am not "restoring" my tractor, I just want it to be a good working model, with little visible rust...

Is there a paint you guys use in particular, or do you get the closest red spray paint at Wal*Mart?

Also, does that primer that converts surface rust to primer really help?

IH 2150 red paint is available from Case IH. It can also be matched by many paint manufacturers. You can buy it in spray cans, quarts, or by the gallon at a reasonable cost. If you can't find it locally, try Carter & Gruenewald online. Most auto parts stores that sell automotive paints can match it. Rudi has a list of paint codes on his manual site.

Everyone here will agree......the best choice for you will be the Case/IH Ironguard 2150 paint used in conjunction with the Case/IH Irongaurd primer and reducer or thinner. It wouldn't hurt to use a little hardener in the paint....mix a ratio of 8:2:1. That's eight parts paint, two parts thinner/reducer, one part hardener. The hardener can be purchased from any automotive paint supply store.

Allen, I second what BD and Bud said. The 49 that Bud fixed up for me when my health prevented me from finishing it looks great. The discount paints from Walmart, etc will fade if the tractor sets out much. If you want to see the progress on the one Bud did for me go to the search and type in "cub rescue".

Speaking of setting outside, do you guys keep your tractors covered?

After doing all this work, I plan on keeping the Cub under my boat port, behind the Crowny... I can't see leaving it out in the rain and the snow, but I don't want to seem like a wussy either

due to finances, mine set outside for years, covered with a tarp part time. It definitely takes it 's toll on them. Mine is now under cover in an open shed.

I figure I can keep it under the roof, next to the back wall, and then kind of protect it from the back side with a tarp stretched across the opening - that should keep most of the snow off it, and I'm hoping it will keep the sunlight off the tires too - which I think causes a lot of UV damage over the winter - I know it takes its toll on my boat trailer tires.

BTW - I looked for 4.8x12 tires at Wal*Mart because you said they worked good on the front and didn't scuff the grass, but they only had one tire of each type! What a pain in the .

Does anyone think its worth going with a polyurethane over an enamel? There is quite a bit more expense involved. What about the epoxy primers? They sure are nice, but pricey. I'm redoing a C battery box, and want it to look nice, I may go for the expensive stuff just to see how it looks. I hate parting with the cash though......

I am getting to the point that I am ready to paint.
Really would like to get the compressor, and all the fancy spray gun etc.., but after looking at the prices of stuff, I could be in for spending a considerable amount. Soooo, my question is:

The IH 2150 paint.
Can it be applied with a good brush for all the cast parts if I add hardener? Is the spray can stuff available with a catalyst or hardener in it to get a decent finish on the tin etc...?

Or, must you use a spray gun if you are to use hardener etc....

I painted my last tractor with Tremclad rattle cans and swore I would never do it again. Looks good enough, just doesn't stand up to the odd gas spill, and the sun does beat on it after awhile.

Someone returned a 4.8x12 tire, so I snatched them both up at the Wal*Mart today while I was buying the battery charger.
