Does anyone know the correct PPG color conversion code for the 1948 Cub red? Thank you.

70019 is what I used when I got mine. Enamel. I told him IH red #50 and he crossed it in a book he had. Looks red to me!

Would PPG be that much better than what is available at the IH Dealer?

I was planning on using the IH enamel and shooting a coat or two of high quality clear over it.

i would call the paint makers help line to make sure the clear is compatible with the paint before attempting that, just to be on the safe side.

I just painted a tractor with IH red enamel and hardener. Came out good. Decided to put on a coat of PPG acrylic enamel that the dealer said was compatible. I wiped down the tank and hood with the PPG reducer to get off any dust. In less than a minute the enamel started to orange peel. Now I have a real mess and have not decided what to do next. I'm not a paint chemist and next time I will talk to PPG first.

It's awful good. My Super A was done with DuPont.

The caseIH paint is very good though. A lot of well known IH collectors use it. Just caseIH red, some hardener, and with a skilled painter you can end up with a finish that is second to none.

I'm not sure about the clear coat. I don't think people are generally doing that.

I used Valspar IH Red from Tractor Supply and Valspar hardener.......Turned out well and looks nice.

I've not used PPG paint, as I have tried to stay away from paints needing hardener.

I have used a LOT of IH red, IH white, and IH Yellow on cubs and cadets, and I love it! It is easy to work with, spraying just add a little acetone and it sprays excellent. You can even brush it on, and if you are careful, the brush strokes come right out and you cannot tell if it was sprayed or brushed. I sprayed my grader blade with IH Iron Guard white, then pushed about 200 cubic yards of topsoil with it, and it just barely wore off on the cutting edge of the blade only. It is some seriously tough paint, without adding hardener!

I just recently was finishing up a Cub Cadet and needed to paint the mower deck covers yellow. I ran out of IH paint, so I bought the Valspar rattle can stuff from Tractor Supply. HATED IT! Lousy coverage, covered some places, others showed right through, wrong shade of yellow, rubbery finish that really never hardened completely. I was spray painting in perfect conditions, low 80s in daytime, 70s at night, low humidity, and it took nearly 3 days for the paint to dry enough to handle the parts without leaving finger prints. I'll never buy that junk again!

I'm like gitractorman, I don't wanna use any hardener either.
I do have a tractor that was painted with PPG by the PO, and it came out fantastic!! Great finish. Don't know which red he used, but it looks great.
You may have seen the picture below in a previous post, but here it is again just so you can get a peep at the finish. This was taken at a local tractor show. Couple asked if their little one could sit on it for a picture. Heck, let's start 'em young.

Sent an email to the previous owner. He just responded. He used PPG Concept # 71969 on my cub.

The body shop that's going to paint the parts for me uses PPG "Concept," a two part, one step paint. I visited the PPG dealer today and found out the following:

70019 IH #50 LT red is not available in Concept.

71310 IH #2150 red and 71969 Ford red are available in Concept @ $131.00/quart

My Cockshutt 20 is painted with PPG Concept. That stuff lays down like no other paint I've used, fantastic stuff! The only problem with Concept is that it's seriously expensive, a gallon of the red was $300+ nine years ago. PPG makes great stuff, but even the local body shops say they're over priced.

My 48 was just done in the IH 2150 that I got from a local dealer. The tractor came out pretty good. It was only around $40 a gallon. Pa cub I see you are down in the Washington County area. You have a really good local Case/IH dealer right down the road from you.

Yes, thank you. I have been dealing with them since the local New Holland dealer was forced out of buisness last December. Some of the New Holland personnel now work there (and one from the local Dodge dealership who was also "closed.")

I presume we are talking about Bull International.
