Granny is STUCK in first gear. I can move the shift lever any which way I want and it don't do nuttin'.

Does this mean that the forks are messed up, or is the shifter itself broken? I am a little leary of crackin it, but gonna hopefully this weekend after all this rain y'all been sendin us goes AWAY :!:

Ideas :?: Possibilities  :?:

I am just hoping it doesn't involve welding - not so good at that yet...

Rudi, it could be a broken or bent fork. Just pop the top of the tranny case and have a look.

Like BD said - take the top of the shifter off and you will likely notice that the bolts that the shifter interacts with are loose. Happened to me at least twice. Upon reinstalling, be sure to put the ball of the shifter into the proper location for 1st gear (pay attention to ball location upon removal). Put the tractor in neutral and start to test results. 10 minute job at most.

John and BD:

Thanks, now I think I can probably do it. Doesn't sound so hard. Just a little intimidating.

Will let you know what happens.

Rudi,

That's the kind of job that's a real confidence builder. You're lucky it came up!

I am not too sure about the confidence building. Right now it more like severe trepidation! Gonna try though!

Well, I cracked Granny's tranny (by the stick) today. Hmmmmm, awful brown in there :!: Looks like a lot of water got in there somehow. Gonna need to change the fluids for sure. Kerosene flush and new 90W is needed.

Found the problem causing Granny to be stuck in first......

Part # 22 is cracked...just above the arrow.... :( Guess I am gonna have to take it out and get it welded by someone who knows what he is doing - which means definitely not me....

The bolts holding down both parts # 18 and 22 were loose. # 18 seems stripped and will not tighten, and # 22 we were able to tighten up and get the shifter working somewhat.

I am learning, slowly, but learning nonetheless

Both of them parts were broken and welded on my parts tractor. When I got the tractor ,the shifter and stick were missing. But those two parts were still there and the weld was broken again on them. You might be better off getting replacements. 8)

Part # 22 - 355 600 R93 - Fork is $86.00 Cdn...... I don't be thinking on getting a new one..... Hey there has to be one available for around 20 bucks used... I mean come on - some of these prices are out of line, way out of line!

Maybe I WILL have to take Jethro's apart!
