I checked three of the best-stocked hardware stores in these parts, the Wal*Mart, the Home Depot, and then a local building-supply store (Curtis Lumber) just for grins.

None of them carried actual TSP (must be one of those new NY laws like the one that outlawed gas cans with the accordion nozzle/cap so I can't replace any of mine) and none of them had even heard of washing soda, but most of them were happy to point me to an aisle that was all the way across the store - probably just to get me and my silly-a55 question out of their department

Hi ALL,

I was extremely skeptical about the "Arm & Hammer Washing Soda"
removing the paint and read several places that it "would not" remove
the paint in a electrolysis vat. Well, don't believe it. I just leave the part
in the vat for 3-6 days and it comes off easily with a putty knife or in my
case I use a sand blaster. A very small one - "30lb" at 60-90 psi. cleans
right down to the shiny metal.

I have cleaned as many as three layers of paint this way. If there is any
rust under the paint, certainly the paint comes off easier. However, if
there is no rust under the paint it just takes a little longer.

I would certainly steer away from the lye. Just my opinion mind you. If
you have access to a Kroger store they all carry the Washing Soda.

I will look, and maybe try it. If I can't find it, then I will just stick with the TSP. It works well, I like it and it is not all that environmentally unfriendly.
