Color of Grill Screen and Wheel Weights on 58 Cub Lo-Boy

Postby Dave F. » Wed Sep 08, 2004 4:10 pm

In Ken Updikes book, Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet, on pages 38 and 39 it
shows one with a red grill screen and one with a white grill screen. Which would be right for a 58 Cub Lo-Boy? Also, what color should wheel weights be?
Thanks,
Brenda

If I am not mistaken, IH began painting the grills white on the '57 models. A '58 would have definitely had a white grill. The wheel weights should be painted red. 8)

The Lo-Boy wheel discs are white. Mine came with red wheel weights, but I have heard it mentioned and have seen pictures with white wheel weights. I really don't know which way I will go when I paint, but the weights look good white on white wheel discs. Anyone know for sure what's proper?

I take it you are just talking about the screen, not the stamped part of the grill. I think the picture on page 39 just appears to be red, a quirk of the lighting. Grilles of that period were all white. IH painted it in one shot after the screen was assembled onto the grill.

I believe the official line from the paint committee was that weights were to be painted the same color as the wheel disk behind them. So at that time Farmall weights would be red and Lo-Boy weights white. As you might well imagine, if somebody went to the dealer for weights, they got whatever color the dealer had on hand.
