Those two gears couldn't be buried any deeper 
Well first gear anyway 
It was a good thing I took things apart as it seems I neglected to put a gasket behind the spline shaft bearing retainer 
Had to drive 20 miles to get some gasket material as most of those sort of things are still in Taxifornia 
Got her all back together and everything sounds fine
