Oven Cleaner effects

Does the use of oven clean strip away all the old paint down to metal, or just get a lot of the grease off? We've finished the overhaul, but there might be a few rear seals/stearing seals that need replaced. I don't want to do a $300 paint job until it is leak free. So meanwhile, I'd like it to look good. I'm thinking of cleaning the grease off, MAYBE light sanding, then just spraying it with rustoleum. Yes, that is a very CHEAP way of doing it, but I just want it to look presentable, until we can strip it down and do it right.

Point of note - my newly painted hood is rusting through (used the Ace Rust Stop rattle cans) after sitting out overnight in a rain storm and having dew on the hood each morning. I didn't do a great job sanding it down, but I am a little disappointed in how quickly the rust is showing through numerous coats of paint. I had intended to get it off the tractor and do a real job to it this winter anyway.

Oven cleaner will take the dirt, grease, and paint off.....may take several applications. 8)

As has been noted several times on the board, oven cleaner will eat away at aluminum....and kinda tough on the lungs. :x

I think for the short term, I'm gonna tape the decals, tape anything that shouldn't be red, rub it with lacquer thinner, and just give it a couple coats of international rustoleum red.

Be careful around the SN plate. I'm not sure if it's aluminum, but oven cleaner almost got all the black paint off mine before I hurriedly washed it off.

The SN plate is aluminum, and the oven cleaner will damage it.
