Please Help

Postby Young & Dumb » Fri Oct 08, 2004 7:24 am

Greetings:

I am new to this site, and I need a little help. I bought a 1949 cub-in-a-box abought two weeks ago. It had been completely disassembled by a friend of mine who just lost interest in restoring the little tractor. I bought it in milk crates and cardboard boxes. So far I have put it back together with new everything. I gave it a valve job, rings and bearings, rebuilt the magneto and carb, and converted the starter and lights to 12v.It is painted with new decals and looks great. The problem that I'm having is with a small steel line. It's about 12-16 inches long with a 90 degree bend at one end and a few slight bends toward the other end. It looks like an oil line, and it's painted red, so I'm pretty sure it is a part of the tractor. I've worked on a few older tractors, but never a cub. Any help that someone could offer as to what this line is and where it goes would be much appreciated. I'm anxious to crank the tractor for the first time, but not until I know what to do with this line.

Thanks for all of your time, Y&D

It sounds like the crankcase vent line. It runs from the front of the block up to the air cleaner canister. You should see fittings in both locations.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Yep, what Big dog said. Also make sure the line and the fittings it screws into are clear. They occasionally get plugged and cause the tractor to smoke from the oil filler.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Thanks for the help. You were right. Can't believe I didn't see it right away.

When I tried to crank the tractor it tries to run but just can't get started, or it will run for a very short time and slowly die. Seems like it has no power. Any ideas? I think it sounds like carb problems or an air leak somewhere.

Y&D:

First, let me say a slightly belated welcome to the Greatest Forum on the Net and to the Cub Family :!: :D

BD and John have given you some good advice already. However, I think a little judicious reading will go a long way to helping you understand your problem.

As a wise group of guys told me more than once, for an engine to run properly you need 3 things. Fuel, Fire and Air. If you have all 3 in the proper mixture it will run like a champ.

Sooooo, might I suggest that you read New Members and Visitors, Please READ. The Cub FAQ's are filled with a lot of really good general knowledge and the Cub Info has some good trouble shooting tips. The Best of H.L. Chauvin puts a humourous yet very helpful tone to fixing your Cub. The Won't Start articles will be really helpful. I would recommend using these articles in conjunction with the GSS-1411 Service Manual (available on the server), which should help you understand what is going on. Also, the Cub Manual Server has lots of info to assist you as well.

You seem to have a good grasp of things, getting to where you are in only two weeks, so this should be a piece of cake for you. Before you know it, your Cub will be purring like a kitten and look real good too :!:

Thirdly, might I again suggest that you visit Binder Books, and order these manuals:
Owner's Manual
TC-37F Parts Manual
GSS-1411 Service Manual.

These three manuals will be the best investment that you can make as a new Cub owner.

Be nice if you were to post some pics of where you are at and as you go along. We always enjoy seeing someone's Cub project progress.

Again, Welcome to the Cub Family :D

Y&D, are you getting oil pressure? If not remove the hex plug on the left rear of the engine. It's on the flange and usually about half way behind the hydralic lines. Fill the hole with oil and screw the plug in securely before starting it.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
