Thirty years ago several of us had the rules for you vs. y'all explained to us by a young lady that worked for our company. The southernmost of us was from Kansas. Since she was a native, we knew it would be the straight story:

"When I mean YOU I say 'you,' when I mean Y'ALL I say 'y'all'."
