Stuck Clutch or ? SUCCESS!

Postby Barnyard » Fri May 07, 2010 4:24 pm

Well, I got one of the Cubs dug out from the dark corner of the barn to mount my cultivators. After sitting for a bit more than a year it started right up but had a low knock in what sounded like the engine. When I put the clutch in it went away. All I can get is grinding when I try to put it in gear. I thought it was a stuck clutch so I shut it off and put it in gear, pushed in the clutch and tried rocking it. Nothing, it won't move.

I pulled the inspection cover and can see the fingers pull the pressure plate back about 1/8" or so.

It shifts through gears okay and rolls easy in neutral so it isn't locked between gears.

What am I missing?

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

It could be the pilot bearing & it could still be the clutch, the plate facing may be rusted to the flywheel .

Clutch disk stuck to the flywheel and/or pressure plate.

Take tractor to open area, headed down hill, coast start in 2nd or 3rd gear and apply the brakes with the clutch depressed.

He might be in trouble Eugene, he's one of those flat landers ya know... Might tie it to the SUV and have Rosanne pull him through town and back. Remember Bill, we love pictures !

Yogie's right, The highest point within 20 miles is the peak of my barn roof. I will work on dragging the Cub up there tonight and let 'er rip. Yeeee Haaaaaw!

Sorry, no pictures for this. Some viewers may have uneasy stomachs.

A stunt like that has to be preceded by the statement, " Hey fellas, watch THIS!"....
I've never met a tractor I didn't like....but I have found some that were greatly annoying....

Video of getting the Cub on the barn roof would be worthwhile too  I don't think that lift you rented for your 'tug trophy' will reach that high or has the capacity for a Cub.

But then again, you have enough of em to spare one.... I bet it would be the only Cub weathervane on the continent, possibly even the world.

  Oh Boy Larry, I'll bet Bill will ask zoning if he can mount a cub on top of BOB for a landmark, now that you gave him the idea :D

There's an F-12 on top of a barn up here in NWOhio at the corner or Co.Rd.C and SR.109

Hi Barnyard, I think I missed something in the conversation, Is it still stuck ? I had the same problem with the '48 that sat outside for 10 years ! In 3rd gear ( NOT RUNNING), against some wood blocks in front of the wheels , I forced the tractor even harder into the blocks by turning the engine over with the crank, a little more ! Then with a long brass punch & hammer , with access thru the inspection hole, and a couple good strikes on the frozen clutch plate CENTER HUB AREA , it freed up ! Be sure NOT to have your hands by the clutch/flywheel area, when it finally frees up ! ( my tractor made "one giant jump" when it let go ) Maybe this might be a safer option ! Lee Petrie , Joliet,IL

Yup, it's still stuck. Those flatlanders are in the process of lining up a crane to put the Cub on the barn roof and a camera crew to film the decent. Someone must have told them about the $10K first prize on tv show Funnies Home Videos or that the Dave Letterman show has a section titled Stupid Human Tricks.
