Kirk, unless you have a 6 volt timing light or a 12 volt cub, you can power the timing light from a separate battery. The timing is (I believe) 16 degrees BTDC when advanced.

BD,

I have neither a 6 volt timing light nor a 12 volt cub. And the reason I asked was due to a request for advice I made earlier. That is, under a load, my cub was missing allot.

I have new plugs, wires, points, (not a new condensor) new cap, fresh gas, clean screen.

Eugene mentioned that I should put a new condenser in it and then time it with a timing light.

I've never used a timing light......so if I do this procedure, I (unfortunately) need a step by step. And my cub is a "mag" type.

I have always gotten satisfactory results static timing them as described in the manual. The timing light is a way to verify the advance is working.

Thanks Jim.....I'll do the static timing and see how she runs.

Timing Cub

Postby Eugene » Thu Oct 28, 2004 11:04 am

Since the engine is running you can adjust the timing by simply rotating the mag a bit, and I mean a little bit. Check for alignment marks on the mag body and block castings. Move the mag only a little bit. The put the Cub under load.

No alignment marks, use two pieces of tape, with pencil marks. You will need this to return mag back into it's original position.

Since this is a magneto, I'm still thinking condensor or coil breaking down.

You also might want to double check the point gap. One or two thousands will make a difference in engine(ignition) timing.

Eugene,

I've reset the points and replaced the condensor. now sometime this weekend I will put her under a load and see how she does. I'll also try the mag tuning.

I'll keep you posted.
BTW, what does TDC stand for??

Thanks
Kirk

Kirk, TDC stands for top dead center. Meaning top dead center of the power stroke where the piston is at the top of it's vertical stroke.

Kirk to add to BD.
For adjustment purposes it is when #1 cylinder is at Top Dead Center. There is an indicator in the front of the engine that points to the crankshaft pulley. There are two marks on the pulley. (older ones only had one) As you crank the engine the first one is 16 degrees before TDC. The second is TDC. If only one mark it is TDC.
When using a timing light you mark the first mark and the pointer with white chalk. With the engine running you increase speed and the light flashes as the two marks line up. This indicates that the spark is at 16 degrees before TDC so that you get optimum power. When cranking to start you want spark at TDC.
