Blemished Batteries

Postby indy61 » Thu Jun 17, 2010 2:36 pm

Called my local Interstate battery distributor to see if they had any blemished 6v group 1 batteries. He said they didn't but had a couple 6v Optima's for $30.00 ea. with core. I figured what the heck for that price I would give it a try.

Man does this Cub crank over good now !
I was wondering if anyone here has made a battery box that fits the Optima, my box is pretty rusted out on the bottom and thought I might replace it with one that holds the Optima nicely.

Good deal! I've heard of folks putting the Optima under the floor pan. then using the old battery box for favorite adult beverages.

If you are not trying to stay 100 % original you can fabricate some thing that will look OK. I used the metal off the back of a washer or dryer to replace the bottom of my battery box. But it is a working tractor.

If you did relocate it, say under the floor pan, I believe the Optima batteries can be mounted at any orientation (i.e. sideways) if need be....

Maybe I will try to make a combination Cub step/Optima battery holder.

Didn't someone report in the distant past that an Optima 6-volt will fit in the original box if you cut the hold-down lugs off the ends? I've never tried it and can't say if it is a good idea or not. The battery may not be returnable under warranty or whatever if modified like this.

I have not seen any information lately, but Optima used to be very sensitive to overcharging, so if you have one with the cutout rather than regulator, watch about leaving the light switch on high charge for too long a time.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

They did indeed have that issue. I've was asuured that that was corrected sometime back. I have one in my old ford. It's been great.

Very interesting thread -
I was told by the Interstate folks in Ft. Wayne, IN that they no longer did such things!?!
I am now ready to [once again] show my ignorance - what is the 'Optima'?

I caught the 6V, but have not run across that term before.

Thanks
Larry - in very wet Indiana.
One of the few advantages of growing older is that I finally realized that I haven't made ALL the stupid mistakes! Yet!

If you can believe their propaganda they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and they may be, but the price is also pretty high.

One other note, unless you can get dealer prices, Interstate batteries is one of the highest priced outfits in our area, and sometimes even with dealer pricing they are over priced.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
