Zenith Carb

My Dad's tractor, a '69 we think, has a zenith carb on it. While it runs good with it, I don't think it came new with a zenith carb. Question is about the air breather tube. Seems to be nothing more than a radiator hose. Was there a metal tube for use with zenith carbs?

HR - as far as I know, there was never anything but a rubber hose used.

Well it certainly works, just doesn't look that good. I guess if he wants the metal tube, he'll have to fashion an adapter, or get an IH carb. It's not that high on the priority list right now. We're just amazed how well it runs after sitting up for so long. Dad's got that look of a kid digging through left-over halloween candy and finding a king sized snicker bar! 8)

The models that came with an IH carb had a metal curved pipe with a short hose on each end. When the Zenith carbs fist started being used as replacements there was an adapter hose available to connect the Zenith to the metal pipe. Later it was replaced with a one piece molded hose which as you noticed looks like a radiator hose. Note the Zenith has a larger intake than the IH and the replacement hose is slightly bigger on the Carb end than the breather end. When Cub-bud redid Missy for me he took a one piece hose and cut it off so it would work with my Zenith carb. and slip over the original metal pipe. Looks and works great.

Well duh! after re-reading your original post and John's reply, I now understand what you were saying. (It sucks to be old) I was thinking about the short piece of hose from the carb to the metal pipe.

Well, I should have included a picture. It always helps. I think John is saying to sleeve the carb end of the metal tube to fit a short piece of the rubber hose.

the originals hoses were a straight hose on each end of the curved tube. To use a Zenith carb with one either get a replacement hose ($) and cut it off, or else get a iece that will fit over the carb, and put a smaller size short piece inside it at the pipe end to reuce the size to fit the pipe.

I too have a Zenith Carb with the hose. When I updated my Farmall H with an M carb I took the tractor down to a muffler shop and had a custom pipe made thats looks great. The same thing could work on the cub too. Star out with a pipe that fits the carb and shrink down the cleaner end. It will look as good as factory.

The hose I used was the one Jim has pictured above. Cut the ends off and install them on the metal pipe. As John said, it looks original and gets the job done.
