Redneck Tapered Implement Bolt

Wed Oct 20, 2010 9:17 pm

This method has been discussed on here before. Since I never have any new ideas, this is how I did it.

First take a 5/8" x 3" bolt and cut off the head.

Jam two nuts on threaded end.

Chuck bolt in drill press.
Image
Grind taper with angle grinder while running drill press.
Image
Finished Bevel on nut.
Image
Install beveled nut on a 5/8 " bolt.
Image
Use Locktite to keep nut tight against the head of bolt.

That looks right near perfect to me. I think this might make the how to forum.

Hey Rudi, sorry about the large pics. I have a new camera and can't figure out how to make smaller ones.

Neat. Is the grinder held some way to control the angle of the bevel? If I tried to freehand it I would never have two the same. I could of course always use the backup system: "Uncle Allen, how?" Vern

A boni-fide, card-carrying Redneck might be offended by the disparaging nature implicit in the title of your posting "Redneck".....Tapered Impliment Bolt; what about "engineered", "creative", "improvised", etc, there's got to be a better way!! Us Rednecks have feeling too!!! JH

Ron:

I am going to archive em as I do for all the articles and if you wish I can resize em and host em from the server. Your choice - let me know. Personally I like the unresized ones as they leave options.

Thanks for putting together article #2 :applause: great job :!:

I just freehand the grinder while the drill press is turning, using a real tapered bolt as a guide. I use the grinder in the pic with a hard wheel to rough grind the nut. Then I switch to another grinder with a 60 grit disc to give it a better finish.

If I have offended any Red-Necks out there I sincerely Apologize. We Red-Necks are so sensitive.
