Farmall Cub

OK, I am coming to the point where I will be making a decision as to which planter I will go with.

I was wondering if you have any knowledge/preferece about planters for the cub. I will be planting sweet corn and pumpkins and I think I will be planting one row at a time.

I am looking at (in no particular order)

John Deere 71 Flex Planter
Cole 12MX
Planet Jr.
Farmall Cub Planter

If anyone has any opinions on these planters or ideas abour other ones, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Here are mine.

1) I don't think the Planet Jr. will suit my needs because it isn't a metered spacing, it just has an agitator.

2) The Cub planter looks like it has about 100 different parts that need to be just right. Is it as hard to assemble as it looks?

3) The 12MX is pretty expensive and hard to find, but it looks really nice.

4) I am leaning towards the Deere 71 (and painting it red) but I would like some experienced opinions.

I'll probably get mugged for saying this, but a friend of mine has a John Deere 920 two row planter and LOVES it. He uses it for field corn planing after we get all finished messing around up at his land in the spring. For a green machine, this pull behind planter works great. The Cub can handle it just fine...

The JD is a good planter. If you have a fast hitch , the 184 IH planter is great. The 172 planter is a good planter , but spacing it somewhat of a problem as the seeds have to fall through a long tube that is not straight thus the spacing is not as good as on a planter that just drops the seeds straight down.

I used a earthway planter[you push it]so a Cub planter was a big step up.Took a lot less time.Not to hard to set up either.Mine also has a fertilizer on it,something to keep in mind.I'm all set,now for a decent growing season.Last spring was real wet here.Kevin

The 12MX Cole is the only one that will space pumpkins correctly, and not crush the seed.

I really want a 12MX, but unless I can find one for under $400, they are out of my price range. I will keep an eye out, but I am not holding out much hope. I also like the fertilizer sidedresser on there too.

The fertilizer hopper doesn't hold enough. You have to refill often.
here is a Chinese knock-off of the MX12 that sells for about $600. It has mixed reviews.

There is an IH 185 planter for sale. It is a two row unit. Is this a good one?

Yes it is a good planter, you will have to adapt it to fit a cub though I believe

Yeah, it has a 3 Point Hitch right now, but I can make it work.

I think I will look into this one. If I can get into it without breaking the bank.

Ok, I have been studying hard, and someone throws a wrench into the works. I was driving home and there was a 4 row planter in a guy's yard about 1/2 mile from the house. I stopped and looked and it is an AC planter that is toolbar mounted. It has 4 "Unit Planters" on it. They have seed boxes, and two other typw boxes on them. There are also two large boxes on the toolbar frame.

I can't identify the planters, so I will have to go back and take pictures. They are pretty big units, but they look pretty good. I think one row is all I would want to put on the back of a Cub.

Anyway doesn't want very much for the whole thing, and I think I get what I want off of the unit and sell the rest for what I have in it.
