Shifter lever pulled right out!

Just a quick question,

What holds the shifter lever in place on top the tranny. I know you can remove the cover and the shifter lever comes out with the cover.

While moving snow yesterday, to my HORROR  the shifter lever came right out in my hand. The rounded bally thing is still intact on the end, I'm just wondering what could have fallen off, and if it did, it is inside the tranny and could cause more damage. I managed to get it back to the shop in reverse. I'll be opening it up tonite. We're having a snow storm as I write this.

Hi EZ. You just found one of the weak links in the cub. The inside cup shaped washer has broken loose from the shifter lever. You have to remove the tower from the tranny, turn upside down, pry out the gate cup and get hold of the washer that came loose from the shifter handle and have it re-welded back on. Rick

EZ,

There is an article I wrote that is available on Rudi's page that may make it clear. Take a look at: http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/Maintenance%20Tips%20and%20Techniques/Articles%20by%20George%20Willer/Cub%20Shifter%20Repair/Cub%20Shifter%20Repair%20and%20Improvement.htm and I think it will make it clearer. I've repaired quite a few of them for myself and others.

Thanks guys,
You are spot on! :D
I took the top off and found that to be exactly the problem. Luckily I have #2 Cub, '67 Loboy. I pulled his top off and looked it over. It too has been repaired some time ago, but works like a charm even though the lever is designed with a forward bend as opposed to the straight-up configuration of my '49. Nevertheless it feels good.

George, that is an excellent write-up, I have it saved for viewing offline and will head straight in that direction to repair.

Thank-you for taking the time to prepare that.
Much appreciated.

Gotta go move some snow now! :D
