Touch control question

After sitting in the garage for several years the touch control reservoir on my 1955 Cub was low. I topped it off and bled off the air. Tonight I have a small puddle on the floor under the cylinder block. It looks like it is leaking at the gasket between the cylinder block and cover. I looked at the touch control manual posted by Rudi, and this beast looks pretty complex for my limited abilities. Is it common for these to leak at this gasket, or is this a sign of more problems? If I am going to remove the block to replace this gasket, should I go further with a rebuild? Thanks for any thoughts and advice you can give me.

Vern,

Rebuilding the block isn't difficult. Get a kit from a Case/IH dealer. This has all of the "O" rings and gaskets you will need. Just remember to keep everything very clean. It's not a difficult job so give it a shot 8)

Should have mentioned that you can try to tighten the bolts on the cover. I don't have my manual handy at the moment but I think the torque spec for those bolts is 25 ft. lbs. 8)

If you are going to remove the touch control and tighten the bolts (35 ft. lbs.), might as well replace the gasket, part #351983R1.

When you go to buy the overhaul package, you will need the cast number of the block so the correct one can be ordered. 8)

Thanks Donny and Cub-Bud for your help. I'll definitely put a new gasket in, but I'm kinda leaning toward your "if it ain't broke fix it anyway" way of thinking on this, Donny. I just went out and got the casting number off the block, and I think I'll order a rebuild kit. After 50 years it could probably stand some new parts, I know I could! :lol: Anyway, I've had a lot of fun and had a lot of learning experiences so far with the old girl, no reason this should be any different, although I may have to holler again if I screw things up too badly. Thanks again. 8)

What is the casting number :?: I might be able to supply you with the part # for the kit before you go and order it. :wink:

Hi Vern,

I read you thoughts about re-building your touch control unit. If you decide
to re-build yourself I suggest that you go to Sears or somewhere and get
you a set of the little pliars that have several different tips that you can
insert in the end of the pliars. You will need a pliar that have 90 degree
angled points to fit inside of the small pistons and pull them out of the
cylinder bores. I think I paid about $20.oo for a set. Of course after I
scratched the cylinder wall. You don't think I would buy something like
that before I learned my lesson the hard way do you?

The casting number is 360719-R1. Having the part number would be a real help when I call CaseIH. Thanks a lot. 8)

Thanks for the tip on the pliars. I'll add those to the toolbox before I start the rebuild. I'm sure I'll need all the help I can get. :)

We're supposed to get 4+" of snow here in downeast Maine tonight. I just put the snowplow blade on Big Red. (My 4 year old Luke named the Cub; I guess size is relative when you are that age :lol: ). Anyway, when I figure out how to do it, I am going to post some pictures of my plow rig. It came with the tractor when my Dad bought it so I figured it was a factory setup, but it doesn't look anything like any of the pictures you folks have posted.
